A small village square with a few birds and a light breeze near the church in Engelen, the Netherlands.
Children playing come into the little square. They don’t speak the local dialect but perfect Dutch. The dialect is slowly disappearing from our language.

About the picture
The photograph shows the small brick church building with a steep gable roof and a narrow spire. It is the Oude Lambertus Church in Engelen. The church has several tall, narrow arched windows. History of the Oude Lambertuskerk (church)
The Old St Lambert’s Church in Engelen has a long history: the site is first mentioned as early as 815, and a small wooden church already stood there at that time. Later, a late-Gothic cruciform church, built at the end of the 15th century, was erected on the site of an even older Romanesque church.
During the Eighty Years’ War, that church was severely damaged. In 1587, the church was largely destroyed; only the chancel remained intact, and this still forms the oldest part of the building. That chancel was restored in 1615 and has since then, with interruptions, remained in use as a Protestant church.
After the Reformation, Catholics and Reformed Protestants in Engelen lost their places of worship and had to meet elsewhere. A separate Catholic St Lambert’s Church was later built; the current Catholic church dates from 1933 and replaced a Waterstaatskerk from 1829.
The building now known as the Oude Lambertuskerk (Old Lambertus Church) is therefore primarily the medieval choir of the old church. It is an important historical remnant of Engelen’s ecclesiastical history and is still used as a Protestant church.
