About the name of the street
The street name ‘De Drie Zwanen’ (The Three Swans) almost certainly refers to an old inn that once stood in this part of the city. In the Middle Ages and early modern period, houses and inns in our city often had names featuring animals, as house numbers did not yet exist.
In the Middle Ages, swans were symbols of purity, status and hospitality. In ’s-Hertogenbosch, De Drie Zwanen was a well-known building or inn on or near Vughterstraat. The street Achter De Drie Zwanen is literally the alley behind that building.
